Bees’ Waggle Dance: A Way of Talking
Bees are one of those fascinating creatures that are highly vital to our environment. Probably among the most interesting things they have is what is called the waggle dance, a particular manner by which they convey to each other where the food is, especially flowers. This detailed dance showed how smart and socially organized these little insects can be.
The Essentials of the Waggle Dance
The name given to this dance is the ‘waggle dance’, and it involves worker bees within a beehive. It incorporates movement that provides essential details about the location of food. The dance is usually performed on a vertical surface, like a honeycomb for example, and other worker bees in the beehive observe it.
The basic elements of the waggle dance include:
Waggle phase: The bee travels in a straight line and moves her bottom from side to side. The distance of the waggle run is directly proportional to the distance of food from the beehive.
Turn Phase: The bee turns right and performs a round dance. The angle of this turn from straight up indicates the location of the food. Return Phase: The return to the starting point is made, repeating the waggle and turn phases.

Decoding the Dance
If other worker bees watch the waggle dance closely, then they know where the food is. How far away it is is hinted at by the length of the waggle run. The angle of the turn in the waggle run shows which way to go compared with the sun. Bees can make use of the sun as a compass very well even if they cannot see it directly.
The major aim of the waggle dance is to communicate to fellow bees about the location of food; it thus attracts more bees to participate in finding the food. In this sense, when one worker bee dances, she is able to mobilize several bees to one specific location for food gathering, hence making food gathering less cumbersome.
